While I have rarely seen trans-gender patients in my practice, I do understand that they will generally have many issues accompanying their desire to be different. As we all have seen in life, “standing out, looking different, acting different, etc. ” is always accompanied by stares, changes in face tones, looks of non-acceptance, and unfortunately, at times, verbal abuse.
I just came across this study by Dr. Saeed Ahmed, that gives mental health professionals a “heads up”, in dealing with many of these associated problems. Transgender patients face mental health challenges. (Press the control button and Enter at the same time in order to see the report)
I believe that this is something in the urban areas we will be seeing more of, and we should be aware and understand the implications to the patient and the family.
