Bullying may have a negative effect on the victims for many years. According to a British study that was published in the “BMJ”, every third young adult with depression may have been bullied as a child.
Depression is a leading contributor to the global burden of disease. The incidence and prevalence of depression increases rapidly from childhood to early adulthood, and by age 18 years the prevalence is similar to that in adults. This has led to suggestions that school based preventive programmes could help to reduce the burden of depression. However, the results of cognitive behaviour programmes in schools have been disappointing.
Data from 14,500 Bristol residents, who had been taking part in a health survey since the 1990s, were analysed for this study. The sample included 4,000 young people who, at ages 13 to18, were interviewed about their experiences of bullying and depression.
683 participants reported that they had been victimised by peers at least once a week at the age of 13. At age 18, fifteen per cent of these had depression. This rate was three times higher than 18 year-olds who had not been bullied.
The analysis showed that more than 30 per cent of depression diagnosed in the study may be attributable to bullying in childhood. If other variables, such as behavioural disorders or family problems were taken into account, the link with depression was weaker, but still twice as high when compared to the others surveyed.
Conclusion When using observational data it is impossible to be certain that associations are causal. However, our results are consistent with the hypothesis that victimisation by peers in adolescence is associated with an increase in the risk of developing depression as an adult.
